Wearer's of Davaar - Gillian Swinton

This week, we’re excited to introduce you to Gillian Swinton, a Scottish-born Kiwi who’s currently embracing her homesteading era on a beautiful 2.7 hectare property in Lauder, Central Otago. Gillian has been a proud wearer of Davaar since the very beginning, and if anyone understands the importance of wool, it’s her—especially with how cold it can get in this part of the world!

Alongside her partner, Hamish, Gillian has transformed their land into a self-sufficient haven where they grow, preserve, and explore different methods of producing their own food. When they have surplus, they sell it at their local roadside farm stall, sharing the fruits of their labour with the community.

But farming isn’t the only thing that keeps Gillian busy. She’s also a creative powerhouse, working as a freelance digital marketer. Gillian helps businesses and individuals – mostly small rural companies – with their marketing strategies and creative content. In addition to her marketing expertise, she spends her spring rearing calves, and when summer rolls around, their property turns into a bustling B&B, welcoming lucky guests into their homestead.

Gillian’s love for the outdoors is a lifelong passion. She’s worked on ski fields, for the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Fiordland, and as a vet technician. She’s milked cows, worked in veterinary marketing, and this year took the bold step to go full-time freelance, focusing on digital marketing – a move she hasn’t looked back on since.

When she’s not working, you’ll find Gillian outside, working on their lifestyle block alongside Hamish. They’re deeply committed to growing their own food, raising animals, and maintaining their property with the goal of being as self-sufficient as possible. And whenever there’s a chance to explore New Zealand’s stunning landscapes, Gillian’s always ready – whether it’s hiking, off-roading in a four-wheel drive, or adventuring with her beloved dog Ruby by her side.

What’s important to you when purchasing clothing?

Like our food, I like to know where my clothing is from. My preference is for natural fibres too, and I am quite happy to invest in timeless pieces as I know I get my cost per wear down as they tend to last longer. Being kiwi made is important too, I know how hard our farmers work, it feels good to support them wherever I can.

Which Davaar jersey do you have?

I have two! I have two of The Lucky Lass jerseys. One in the motley granite colour and more recently I bought the navy one. They are timeless and can be worn anywhere!

How do you use and wear your Davaar?

My motley granite jersey is still yet to be washed, that's how good wool is! Nearly two years on and not washed is pretty impressive! I just air it out on the line, or pop it out during a frost and it's good as new. I wear it so often, it's hard to find photos of me not wearing it!

What do you love most about your Davaar?

I love the story and the quality. I know I will have these jerseys for the rest of my life with a bit of care, and I think that's pretty neat.
